How I’m Rethinking My Personal Brand at 47 - In an Industry Obsessed with What’s “New”

I work in marketing - a world that honors the new, the now, the next. It’s driven by youth, by trends, by what’s “hot.” And to be honest, I’ve loved that energy for most of my career. It’s fast, creative, constantly evolving.
But recently, I found myself pausing. I broke my first set of reading glasses and ‘aging’ hit my like a tone of bricks. So, at 47, I started asking:
Do I still belong in this space? Am I still relevant? And maybe more importantly: Do I even want to play the same game anymore?
The Short Answer? Yes. But Not in the Way I Thought.
In my 20s and 30s, my personal brand was all about potential. I was ambitious, tireless, always learning, always proving, and it worked. But now, my brand is evolving - not because I’m trying to chase the same version of “relevance,” but because I’ve earned the right to define it differently.
Now, it’s about depth over speed, intention over attention, and substance over style (without sacrificing the style).
Here’s what I’ve learned - and what I’m still learning - about evolving your personal brand as you grow older, especially as a woman.
1. Experience Isn’t a Footnote. It’s the Headline.
For too long, I tried to downplay my age - not because I was ashamed of it, but because I thought it would make others more comfortable. But now, I speak from experience, not around it.
I’ve seen enough to know what works.
I’ve failed enough to know what doesn’t.
And I’ve led enough to know when to listen first.
Your experience is not the quiet part of your brand. It’s the loudest, most credible one.
2. Visibility Looks Different, And That’s A Good Thing.
In my earlier career, visibility looked like being everywhere, doing everything, saying yes to it all. Now? It’s about intentional presence - showing up with purpose, not performance.
Sometimes it’s on stage. Sometimes it’s in a one-on-one where the real influence happens. Sometimes it’s in the content I choose to share, or not share.
Being visible now means being undeniable, not loud.
3. I’m Not Reinventing. I’m Evolving.
There’s so much pressure on women to “reinvent” themselves after a certain age - as if the version we were before needs to be discarded.
But I’m not starting over. I’m building on.
The ambition is still there - it’s just refined.
The curiosity hasn’t faded - it’s sharper.
The confidence? Hard-won. And it’s not going anywhere.
My brand now tells a continuous story - one where growth doesn’t mean erasing the past but honoring it.
4. I’m Not Shrinking. I’m Expanding.
Let’s talk about space.
There’s a subtle expectation that as women age, we should quiet down, soften our edges, “be more gracious.”
But I’ve learned that grace doesn’t require shrinking. In fact, grace is sometimes the boldest act - especially when paired with boundaries, clarity, and no longer needing to prove your worth in every room.
So yes, I raise my rates. I take up space. And I say no faster than I used to. That’s not resistance. That’s respect, for myself and my time.
5. My Values Are My Brand.
I used to think my brand was what I did. Now I know it’s what I stand for.
I don’t need to chase every client, platform, or trend.
I’d rather attract alignment than applause.
I choose partnerships that respect my voice, not just my reach.
This clarity has changed everything; in how I lead, how I market, and how I show up.
6. Style Doesn’t Have an Expiry Date.
Let’s be real, the world still wants to tell women what’s “appropriate” to wear, say, or want after 40.
I say: Style is part of your signal. So I wear what makes me feel sharp, strong, seen - whether that’s bold lipstick, silver hair, sneakers at a speaking gig, or heels when I want to own the room.
You don’t need to tone down. You just need to refine. And your voice? It only gets better with age. Use it.
Final Thoughts: This Is the Prime
We don’t talk enough about the power women carry as they grow older, especially in fast-paced, youth-obsessed industries like mine.
But here’s the truth: You are not past your prime. You are entering it.
Your personal brand doesn’t fade with time, it becomes more magnetic, more grounded, and more you.
And if you’re like me, 47, experienced, evolving, you don’t need to chase what’s hot. You are what’s real. And that’s the most relevant thing of all.
