The word democracy comes from the Greek words "demos", meaning people, and "Kratos" meaning power; so we can say democracy could be thought of as "power of the people". You can check four pillars of democracy with detail given below.
The importance of democracy
Today, especially in Western countries, we have adopted many political systems and practices as a form of governance. While it could be argued that these were institutions developed and implemented to serve different social functions, it is undeniable that democracy has long been advocated as one of the most preferred forms of government. This, however, is based on subjective judgments by people, as there is no simple answer to such a complex question. Democracy may or may not be as good as they believe it to be, given the reality of human factors in every form of government. There is a strong tendency among citizens of our world today to be preoccupied with money, more so now that they have realized that they do not control it.
The four pillars of democracy
Freedom of speech and expression is fundamental for a democratic system of government. The founder of the United States, and then the leader of the Democratic Party, Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Freedom of Speech and Expression is the voice that everyone can use to express their opinions, fears, and opinions on issues. People use this freedom to talk to each other and make alliances in different ways. The expression of one's opinion is their voice, and their existence is possible because of their freedom to express. When a person's opinion is free, they will think independently and honestly; and they will not be influenced by a single person or a political group.
Freedom of speech
Democracies ensure freedom of speech, or at least the ability to express themselves freely. This right allows people to criticize their government or private individuals. Freedom of the press Democracies allows freedom of the press. The right to vote Democracies allow the free vote of their citizens. People are allowed to choose who represents them in a public office, such as a government official, law professor, or politician. Right to own property Democracies is characterized by a system of private property rights. They are characterized by private ownership of land, wealth, and other assets. People are allowed to own land, wealth, and other assets freely, without the threat of force from any other people, nation, or government.
The right to vote
Under the United States Constitution, every citizen has the right to vote. This right is vital in holding officials to account. At the federal level, all citizens are automatically eligible to vote for president, vice president, and members of the House of Representatives, and every citizen is automatically entitled to a vote in each of the 50 state legislative elections. But this does not mean all states equally protect the right to vote. For example, South Dakota and Wyoming have no voting rights at all for residents, because they do not meet the constitutional standard for elections being held on a regular basis. At the state level, some states establish a minimum voting age.
The right to own property
The people are the ultimate owners of their property – it is their birth right. The people own the land and mineral resources on it. If a person does not have a piece of land or a building to sell, he cannot sell or rent it – he cannot buy or sell it unless he is capable of doing so. The right to vote is to have the right to decide who rules over you and your country. Voting is a privilege that is dependent on one's living circumstances. Having a privileged right to vote depends on a person's finances. Some have access to land and wealth while others do not. So it is not a gift that is given by the state. If you do not have access to land, you do not have a right to vote. On the other hand, if you are wealthy you have a privileged right to vote.
The rule of law
We need to give power back to the people by making sure the most basic rights to vote and own property are protected. Otherwise, how can you have a nation? Democracy is the "rule of the people". To prove how society can survive without a shared, agreed-upon set of values, let's look at a society from the late 18th century with very different values and politics. During this time, most people were deeply religious and considered the Bible and other religious writings to be the absolute truth. Most people also believed in God and some people believe that the Bible has some importance today.
Conclusion
In my view, there is a huge difference between representative and direct democracy. While they often share some key principles, in practice, they differ greatly in terms of how power is distributed, what laws are made, how people are represented, and even in how the legal system is interpreted and implemented. I don't believe there is any way to adequately represent all the people of a community in an area like Co Laois. It is pretty much impossible. Thus I don't believe a system that allows people to vote on things like roads is effective in achieving a democratic outcome. At the same time, it is extremely difficult to get a representative government to enact laws.
